As a long time gentoo user I finally decided to forgo my fixation with gentoo-linux and jump onto the ubuntu bandwagon

In one day I was up and running with Ubuntu Hardy Heron -the only , modification I needed was a small change to the xorg.conf file to get stereo working with the nvidia drivers .

The links pertaining to this are collected on the del.icio.us tag  here

The most important modification was disabling the "Composite extension" which ubuntu uses to deliver all the amazing eye candy. The composite extension unfortunately interferes with quad-buffered-stereo. So once the segment as suggested here was added to the xorg.cong file , everything works.

Section "Extensions"
       Option      "Composite" "off"
EndSection

You  can get a link to a "crystallography certified" xorg.conf file here
